The IWF has released an update on 22 of the ongoing doping analysis cases from the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. For these 22 athletes, the IOC has officially ruled that they committed anti-doping rules violations and has disqualified their results and medals.

Beijing 2008:

  • SEDOV, Vladimir – KAZ – 85 kg
  • AKKAEV, Khadzimzrat – RUS – 94 kg
  • LAPIKOV, Dmitry – RUS – 105 kg
  • DAVYDOVA, Natalya – UKR – 69 kg

London 2012:
  • ​KHURSHUDYAN, Hripsime – ARM – +75 kg
  • KOSTOVA, Boyanka – AZE – 58 kg
  • KULESHA, Iryna – BLR – 75 kg
  • ZHARNASEK, Yauheni – BLR – +105 kg
  • TSIREKIDZE, Rauli – GEO – 85 kg

Their cases will move to the IWF, which is now responsible for further sanctions or punishments as they see fit. The last update we got on this topic provided some insight into the process the reanalysis takes from sample to sanction.

Notable among these names is Ilya Ilyin, widely considered to be one of the greatest weightlifters of all time until his 2008 and 2012 samples both tested positive. While the IOC has removed his results and taken back his medals, the IWF has yet to show their hand with what types of sanctions they'll be placing on athletes whose past samples tested positive. The first batch of these decisions should be released in early December, so stay tuned for more info as we get it.
