Ben Bergeron's Big Clean Complex is one of toughest barbell cycling workouts ever. Here's what the workout entails:

Find a heavy set in the following complex:
  • 1 high hang squat clean + 1 hang squat clean + 1 squat clean from the ground + 1 push press +
  • 1 high hang squat clean + 1 hang squat clean + 1 squat clean from the ground + 1 push jerk +
  • 1 high hang squat clean + 1 hang squat clean + 1 squat clean from the ground + 1 split jerk

So we're looking at a total of nine squat cleans from various heights and three shoulder-to-overhead movements. This workout taxes the legs, back, grip, core, and mind. It's pure grit in a barbell complex.

The first time I heard of the Big Clean Complex, I saw Nate Schrader complete it with 255lb, and I was amazed.

That's Olympian Kendrick Farris congratulating him at the end there. While Farris can clean and jerk 465lb, he failed the Big Clean Complex at 245lb due to his grip giving out.

ZA Anderson took on the complex about a year later and was able to complete it with 260lb and in a much quicker time than Schrader.

Anderson's quick turnover and cycle time reduces the time his body spends under tension, which helps with this kind of complex.

Hyun-Ho Kim of CrossFit Euddeum in Seoul, South Korea, has just knocked that 260lb record out of the park with this insane 275lb set.

There's so much that's impressive about this. His control of the bar and the weight is incredible, and his pacing is methodical, almost slow. He also doesn't seem to be a particularly huge guy, as both Schrader and Anderson weigh well above 200lb.

Who can beat this world record?

I'd love to see either Alex or Jacob Anderson give this complex a shot as I think they could get close. Alec Smith also comes to mind with his 400lb clean. Mat Fraser and Rich Froning may be able to push this record as well, since we've seen them both do some impressive stuff with a barbell.
