South Regional Recap & Games Qualifiers

Team Qualifiers:

  1. #TeamDensity
  2. Rockwell CrossFit
  3. CrossFit Omnia
  4. Pillar CrossFit
  5. Backcountry Black
Consistency was the name of the game for #TeamDensity of CrossFit Overtake for the weekend. Though a 1st place finish on any one event eluded them, Marco Coppola and his team managed to rack up two 2nd places, two 3rd places, and two 4th place finishes on their way to claiming the top spot at this year’s CrossFit Games South Regional.

4 out of the top 5 qualifying teams will be making their rookie debuts this year at the Games, leaving Backcountry Black the lone veteran team. Though Backcountry ran into a few stumbling blocks over the weekend, experience and leadership from the team’s veteran Games competitors pulled them together and landed them in 5th place. This will be their third straight trip to Carson.

Men Qualifiers:

  1. Roy Gamboa
  2. Travis Williams
  3. Logan Collins
  4. Sean Sweeney
  5. Joseph Guesnier
Going into the final day of competition, there was a tight race for the qualifying spots. Though it seemed that Roy Gamboa and Travis Williams were securily on the top, 3rd-7th place were separated by less than 20 points. EZ Muhammad was sitting in 8th with, what seemed like too great a distance to overcome, but after a 2nd place finish on Event 6, even he was within striking distance of the top 5. It all came down to the final workout of the day. Though EZ led the pack for the entire workout, a no-rep on his final legless rope climb was enough to allow dark horse, Logan Collins, to finish 1st clinching his trip to Carson and putting EZ Muhammad a heart-breaking 3 points out from qualifying. Sean Sweeney and Joseph Guesnier rounded out the top 5.

Women Qualifiers:

  1. Camille Leblanc-Bazinet
  2. Whitney Cappellucci
  3. Alexis Johnson
  4. Tennil Reed
  5. Candace Wagner
An epic final day of competition led to a bit of confusion on the women’s side in Dallas. Heading into the final event, only 10 points separated 4th-7th place. A fast and furious heat settled with Whitney Cappelluci taking 1st, Brittany Chestnut taking 2nd, and Tennil Reed clinching 3rd on Event 7. From there, a flurry of athletes finished, but absent from the finishing pack were Mandi Janowitz and Michaela North. Both Janowitz and North needed strong finishes in the last event to earn a qualifying spot. Failing to complete the event within the time-cap made it look like their Carson hopes had all but dissipated. However, the crowd was quickly surprised when North and two other women appealed their scores on the last event. With the appeals granted, it looked like North was set to make a trip to Carson and Candace Wagner was going to be out. The appeal, however, was revoked after in-depth video analysis and intervention by CrossFit HQ. Details of the event can be found on the Games site. With the scoring adjusted, Candace Wagner finished the weekend in 5th clinching her third trip to the CrossFit Games.
