The University of La Verne football team is coming off an 0-10 season, but new head coach Richard Sanchez has been brought in to hopefully turn things around and give the Leopards their first winning season since 2015.

La Verne was well off pace last year in the Sun Division of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, which was won by Pomona-Pitzer at 7-1. Redlands was second in the three-team division with a 3-5 record. La Verne was 0-8 in conference games last season.

Sanchez and his squad will have a little time to get comfortable, as the team’s SCIAC schedule doesn’t kick off until Sept. 27. 

However, the first two conference games for the Leopards this year will be against the usual favorites to compete for the conference crown – Chapman and Pomona-Pitzer.

Only time will tell if Sanchez can be the catalyst to turn things around at La Verne. The team has only had two winning seasons in the last two decades – 2005 (5-4) and 2015 (8-2).
