As functional fitness has exploded in popularity, two names have emerged at the forefront of the movement: CrossFit and HYROX.

While both demand strength, endurance and mental toughness, they are built around very different philosophies. HYROX is a standardized fitness race that looks the same around the world. CrossFit, meanwhile, is constantly varied, making every workout—and every competition—unpredictable.

Whether you're deciding which event to try or simply want to understand the differences, here's a breakdown of how HYROX compares to CrossFit and how each sport crowns its champions.

What Is HYROX?

HYROX describes itself as "The Fitness Race"—a standardized competition designed so athletes can compare their performances across every event worldwide.

Every HYROX race follows the exact same format:

  • 1 km Run
  • 1 Functional Workout Station
  • Repeat eight times

The eight workout stations are:

  1. SkiErg
  2. Sled Push
  3. Sled Pull
  4. Burpee Broad Jumps
  5. Row
  6. Farmer's Carry
  7. Sandbag Lunges
  8. Wall Balls

Because every race uses the same format, athletes know exactly what they'll face before arriving at the start line and can train specifically for those movements.

What Is CrossFit?

CrossFit is a strength and conditioning methodology built around constantly varied functional movements performed at relatively high intensity. Rather than repeating the same workout, CrossFit intentionally changes movements, loading, volume and time domains to develop broad, well-rounded fitness.

A CrossFit workout can include virtually any combination of:

  • Olympic weightlifting
  • Powerlifting
  • Gymnastics
  • Running
  • Rowing
  • Swimming
  • Jump rope
  • Bodyweight movements
  • Strongman-style implements
  • Odd-object carries
  • Cycling
  • SkiErg
  • Functional conditioning

One day may feature heavy clean & jerks and muscle-ups. The next could include running, handstand walks and rope climbs. Athletes rarely know every workout ahead of time, especially at higher-level competitions.

The biggest distinction is predictability.

A HYROX athlete can spend months perfecting one race format because every competition is identical.

CrossFit athletes, on the other hand, prepare for the unknown. Competition organizers may combine nearly any movement or time domain, requiring competitors to be proficient across a much wider range of physical skills.

HYROX Race vs. The CrossFit Games

While both events determine elite fitness athletes, the championships look dramatically different.

The HYROX World Championship uses the same race format athletes have competed all season: Because the format never changes, success comes from maximizing efficiency and pacing within a familiar race structure.

The CrossFit Games are designed to identify the "Fittest on Earth." Throughout championship week, athletes face a wide variety of unknown events that may include:

  • Olympic lifting
  • Long-distance endurance
  • Sprint workouts
  • Gymnastics
  • Swimming
  • Obstacle-style events
  • Heavy carries
  • Team events
  • Novel movements introduced specifically for the Games

Competitors often don't learn every workout until shortly before they compete, testing not only fitness but adaptability under pressure.

How Athletes Reach The CrossFit Games

The CrossFit Games season follows a multi-stage qualification process.

The journey begins with The CrossFit Open, a worldwide online competition where anyone can register and complete the same weekly workouts over three weeks. From there, top athletes advance through additional qualifying stages—including Quarterfinals and Semifinals—before earning one of the coveted spots at the CrossFit Games.

Can You Watch HYROX And The CrossFit Games?

Currently, HYROX does not offer a comprehensive live broadcast platform where fans can stream entire races from home, making attending in person the primary way to experience the full event.

The 2026 CrossFit Games, however, will be streamed live on FloElite as part of a new global media partnership between CrossFit and FloSports. Coverage includes the Individual, Team, Masters, Teenage and Adaptive divisions, with expanded storytelling and increased athlete prize purses.
